IP67 vs IP54: Which IP Rating Does Your Inspection Robot Need?

IP67 means the robot is completely dust-tight (6) and can withstand immersion in water up to 1 meter deep for 30 minutes (7). For inspection robots, this means they can operate in heavy rain, wash-down environments, and areas with standing water — making them suitable for outdoor industrial sites, oil & gas facilities, and water treatment plants.

IP54 provides protection against dust ingress (5 = dust protected, not dust-tight) and water splashing from any direction (4). IP67 provides complete dust-tight protection (6) and full immersion protection up to 1 meter for 30 minutes (7). IP67 is significantly more robust and suitable for harsher environments including outdoor use in rain and wet industrial settings.

For most outdoor industrial inspection applications — including power substations, oil & gas facilities, mining sites, and chemical plants — IP67 is strongly recommended. IP54 may be sufficient for indoor or sheltered environments with limited water exposure. If your site experiences heavy rain, wash-down procedures, or potential flooding, IP67 is the minimum recommended rating.

IP67 is generally sufficient for Zone 2 oil & gas environments from an ingress protection standpoint. However, oil & gas inspection robots also require ATEX or IECEx certification for explosion-proof operation in hazardous areas. IP67 addresses water and dust ingress, while ATEX/IECEx addresses explosive atmosphere safety — both are required for oil & gas deployment.

Chemical plant inspection robots should have a minimum of IP67 to handle chemical splashes, wash-down procedures, and outdoor exposure. For areas with corrosive chemicals, the robot enclosure materials must also be chemically resistant. In ATEX Zone 1 or Zone 2 areas, ATEX certification is required in addition to IP67.

Standard IP67 robots are rated for immersion up to 1 meter for 30 minutes — not for sustained underwater operation. For underwater inspection, you need IP68-rated equipment (continuous immersion beyond 1 meter). IP67 inspection robots are suitable for crossing shallow water obstacles and operating in heavy rain, but not for underwater survey missions.
